Your patients want to recover faster, and your competitors are adding new machines. But not every recovery tool earns its place in a clinic. Here is what the research supports, what the rules allow, and where to spend first.
Most UAE physio and sports clinics should start with a cold compression system and a red light therapy panel. They are compact, affordable and fit a treatment room. Add an ice bath if you see many athletes. Do not plan on a hyperbaric chamber until you have checked the health authority rules, because Dubai's HBOT standards are strict. All of these tools support rehab. None replaces it.
Clinic Recovery Equipment at a Glance
| Equipment | What the research says | Best clinic use | Space |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold compression | Less pain early after joint surgery | Post-op knees and shoulders, sprains | Very small |
| Red light therapy | Promising, depends on dose and condition | Add-on for joint pain and soreness | Small |
| Ice bath | Some evidence for less soreness, low quality | Athletes after hard sessions | Medium |
| Infrared sauna | Small athlete studies only | Relaxed recovery add-on | Medium |
| Hyperbaric chamber | No clear benefit shown for sprains or soreness | Approved medical uses in eligible facilities | Large |
Cold Compression: The Easiest First Buy
Cold compression has the clearest clinic case. A 2024 evidence review by WorkSafeBC looked at 7 systematic reviews and 6 randomised trials after joint surgery. It found less pain and less use of pain medicine, mainly early after surgery. It urged caution because many underlying studies were weak, and it found no clear effect on range of motion or swelling.
In one randomised trial after ACL reconstruction, 36 patients used either compressive cryotherapy or ice packs. Those on compressive cryotherapy stopped narcotic pain medicine sooner.
Why it suits a clinic
- The ColdFlow Recovery System offers cold from 2°C to 15°C and heat from 30°C to 45°C.
- It has adjustable compression levels from 0 to 5, in continuous or intermittent mode.
- It needs no ice and weighs about 7kg, so it moves easily between rooms.
- The complete bundle includes knee, shoulder, elbow and ankle wraps.

Red Light Therapy: A Useful Add-On With a Dose to Respect
Physios often ask whether light therapy is worth room space. The strongest data we found is on knee osteoarthritis. A 2019 BMJ Open meta-analysis of 22 placebo-controlled trials and 1,063 people found low-level laser therapy reduced pain and disability, with no adverse events reported.
Knee osteoarthritis: pain reduction beyond placebo (mm on a 100mm scale)
Source: BMJ Open 2019. These trials used low-level lasers on set treatment spots, not LED panels, so the results may not carry over directly.
Back pain looks weaker. A Cochrane summary found small effects and said laser therapy should not replace exercise.
A panel makes sense as a low-labour add-on while a patient rests between exercises. Read more on red light therapy for joint pain, and use the lab-tested output figures on each product page to compare panels.

Ice Baths and Saunas: Best for Athlete-Heavy Clinics
Ice baths
The Cochrane review of cold-water immersion covered 17 small trials and 366 people. It found some evidence of less muscle soreness up to 96 hours after exercise compared with rest. Study quality was low, so present it as a comfort and soreness tool. Our guide on cold plunging after training explains timing for strength athletes.
A shared tub adds work. Plan for a written cleaning routine, filter changes and a screening form. Our Ice Bath Check Up service can support your team.
Infrared saunas
A 2023 crossover study of 16 male basketball players compared an infrared sauna session at about 43°C with passive recovery after resistance training. Soreness was lower and jump performance dropped less after the sauna. It is one small study, so treat a sauna as an extra for athlete packages, not a core rehab tool.
A 2018 Mayo Clinic Proceedings review lists unstable angina, recent heart attack, uncontrolled high blood pressure and severe aortic stenosis among sauna contraindications. It also warns that going straight from sauna to cold water may be risky for patients with a recent heart attack. Screen every patient.
Hyperbaric Chambers: Read the Rules First
Hyperbaric oxygen is the most tempting machine and the hardest to justify for a typical physio clinic. A Cochrane review of nine small trials found insufficient evidence for sprains or exercise soreness, and some evidence of more short-term pain in muscle soreness.
What Dubai's HBOT standard says
The DHA Standards for HBOT Services (Version 2.1, 2022) apply to DHA-licensed health facilities. Key points include:
- HBOT services are limited to hospitals, day surgical centres and qualifying outpatient facilities.
- Only a DHA-licensed consultant or specialist in hyperbaric medicine can provide the service.
- Portable, inflatable or collapsible chambers must not be used in any health facility.
- Multiplace chambers may only be used in hospitals, on the ground floor.
- Equipment needs approval from at least two listed international authorities, plus UAE registration.
- Listed uses are medical, such as non-healing wounds and decompression sickness. Sports recovery is not on that list.
Abu Dhabi and other emirates have their own regulators, so check with them directly. If you are a hospital or qualifying facility, our team can talk through the options. Before that, read our HBOT safety guide and chamber prices in the UAE.

Choosing by patient mix
| Most of your patients are | Prioritise | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Post-surgery knees and shoulders | ColdFlow | Closest match to the available evidence |
| Older adults with joint pain | Red light panel | Seated, gentle and easy to supervise |
| Footballers, runners, padel players | ColdFlow and ice bath | Local soreness plus whole-body options |
| Desk workers with stiff backs | Exercise first, then heat | Heat wraps show small short-term benefit |
How Recovery Tools Fit Into a Rehab Session?
The equipment should support your treatment plan, not crowd it out. Here is one simple example for a 60-minute sports rehab appointment. Adjust it for each patient, and follow your clinical judgement.
Packaging it for patients
You can include equipment in a rehab package or sell recovery-only visits to discharged patients and athletes. Our commercial page includes sample session packages and pricing models. Before you promote any of this, check that your insurer and regulator accept how you describe and bill it. For athletes, share a practical example such as how to recover like a footballer.
Ask about servicing early
A broken chiller or a dirty tub looks bad in a clinic. Before you buy, ask who services the unit, how quickly they can visit, and which parts need regular replacing. Add those costs to your budget from day one.
Train your team
Every device needs one owner in your clinic. That person keeps the protocols, trains new staff and logs servicing. Write down who may use each tool, session limits and when to stop. A one-page checklist on the wall usually works better than a long manual nobody reads.
Your Clinic Buying Checklist
- Ask your regulator whether each device needs approval for your facility. One 2026 guide says the Emirates Drug Establishment registers medical devices, while DHA and DOH license facilities.
- Ask every supplier for written certificates and warranty terms.
- Check your power, floor load, drainage and ventilation.
- Write clear protocols for screening, timing and cleaning.
- Keep marketing honest. Say "supports recovery", not "cures".
- Track outcomes and patient feedback before you add more equipment.
Physio and Sports Clinic Equipment FAQs
What recovery equipment should a physio clinic buy first?
Start with cold compression and a mid-size red light therapy panel. Both are compact, need little staff time and suit many patients. Add larger equipment once you see steady demand.
Can a physiotherapy clinic in Dubai offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Only if the facility meets DHA requirements. The DHA standard limits HBOT to hospitals, day surgical centres and qualifying outpatient facilities, led by a licensed hyperbaric physician. Confirm the current rules with DHA.
Is cold compression better than ice packs?
Evidence reviews suggest it usually improves pain compared with ice alone, mainly soon after joint surgery. Study quality varies, and there is no clear effect on range of motion.
Does red light therapy work for sports injuries?
Evidence is promising but mixed and varies by condition and dose. Knee osteoarthritis has strong trial data using lasers. Treat panels as an add-on to active rehab, not a replacement.
Are ice baths safe in a clinic?
They can be, with screening, supervision and strict hygiene. Patients with heart conditions or open wounds should get medical clearance first. Keep a written cleaning and water log.
How much does a clinic recovery setup cost in the UAE?
Using current Recover prices, a treatment room setup starts around AED 16,495. An athlete-focused setup with an ice bath is about AED 57,494, before installation.
Share your room sizes, patient mix and budget. We will suggest a practical setup with no pressure to overbuy.
