What Does 1hp Mean in Terms of Power?

Horsepower (hp) is a unit of measurement for power. When we talk about a 1hp chiller, it refers to the power of the compressor used in the chiller. To understand the electricity usage, we need to convert horsepower to kilowatts (kW), the standard unit for electrical power.

 

1 horsepower (hp) is equivalent to 0.746 kilowatts (kW).

 

Daily, Monthly, and Yearly Energy Consumption

To estimate how much electricity a 1hp chiller uses, let’s assume it operates for 10 hours a day.

 

For a 1hp Chiller:

• Power Conversion: 1 hp = 0.746 kW
• Operating Hours: 10 hours per day

Energy Consumption:

• Daily Consumption: 0.746 kW × 10 hours = 7.46 kWh
• Monthly Consumption: 7.46 kWh/day × 30 days = 223.8 kWh
• Yearly Consumption: 7.46 kWh/day × 365 days = 2,723.9 kWh

 

Cost of Electricity

To estimate the cost, we’ll use an average electricity rate of $0.12 per kWh, and convert it to AED.

For a 1hp Chiller:

• Daily Cost: $0.90 (AED 3.30)
• Monthly Cost: $26.86 (AED 98.64)
• Yearly Cost: $326.87 (AED 1,199.82)

 

What About a 2hp Chiller?

The power consumption for a 2hp chiller is double that of a 1hp chiller. Therefore:

2 hp = 1.492 kW (since 1 hp = 0.746 kW)

For a 2hp Chiller:

• Daily Consumption: 1.492 kW × 10 hours = 14.92 kWh
• Monthly Consumption: 14.92 kWh/day × 30 days = 447.6 kWh
• Yearly Consumption: 14.92 kWh/day × 365 days = 5,447.8 kWh

 

Cost of Electricity for a 2hp Chiller:

• Daily Cost: $1.79 (AED 6.57)
• Monthly Cost: $53.71 (AED 197.10)
• Yearly Cost: $653.74 (AED 2,397.64)
